08-010 The Gospel of Mark Study on Jesus

08: Mark 4:21-41

Jesus’ Person is revealed in the following ways:

  1. Jesus is able to control creation and stop a storm just by speaking to it.  Just as God spoke the universe into creation, Jesus  has complete control over creation with His words.
  2. Jesus allowed the disciples to see and hear the behind the scenes explanation of what He was doing.

Jesus’ Character is revealed in the following way:

  1. Jesus desires that His followers hear and understand the good news and His teaching on the Kingdom of God.

Jesus’ Mission is revealed in the following ways:

  1. To teach.  Here we listen to Jesus teach parables, which were illustrations used to explain His point on  understanding the Kingdom of God.
  2. To have control over creation.  The disciples needed to see Jesus’ divinity as well as His humanity.  He really was God in the flesh which meant He controlled everthing, even creation.

09: Mark 5:1-20

Jesus’ Person is revealed in the following ways:

  1. Jesus is the Son of the Most High God.  His person is revealed here by a legion of demons.  Even the demons know and believe in who Jesus actually is.
  2. Jesus controls and gives permission to unclean spirits.
  3. Jesus scares people with His power.

Jesus’ Character is revealed in the following ways:

  1. Jesus is omniscient.  Jesus is able to know what is going on in other places without actually being there.  He knows the demon possessed man is on the other side of the lake and He goes to meet him.
  2. Jesus shows His compassion toward the demon-possessed man.  We can only imagine what this man’s life was like, a miserable existence.  But, Jesus certainly knows his plight.  Jesus knows his history, why he is the way he is and shows mercy and compassion to him.  Jesus sees his misery and desires to heal him.

Jesus’ Mission is revealed in the following ways:

  1. Jesus sought out people to heal.  We often see in the gospels people coming to Jesus.  But here we see Jesus going out of  His way on a search and rescue mission to save this demon-possessed man.
  2. Jesus was on a mission to cast out demons.
  3. Jesus has come to put people back into their right minds. He takes what is humanly impossible to fix and He fixes it.
  4. Jesus sends us out to tell others about what he has done for us.

Take-Aways:

  1. Jesus is powerful enough to heal someone who seems impossible to fix.  Am I praying for those people who I believe are impossible to fix or heal or come to salvation?
  2. In this case Jesus heals a demon-possessed man, which gives me hope for people who have a mental illness.
  3. Am I ready and willing to tell others what Jesus has done for me?
  4. Am  I afraid of people who are disturbed? Should I be?

010: Mark 5:21-43

Jesus’ Person is revealed in the following ways:

  1. Jesus is popular, as we see the crowds surrounding Him so much they were jostling for position around Him.  The crowds were seeking Jesus.
  2. Jesus liked to be outside and on the water.
  3. Jesus had the ability to heal people when they reached out and touched Him.

Jesus’ Character is revealed in the following ways:

  1. Jesus personally speaks to the bleeding woman with terms of endearment.
  2. Jesus is willing to help people.  He responds to people asking for help.
  3. Jesus knows when power leaves His body to  heal people, lots of people touched Him but only one was healed.
  4. Jesus is patient with the sarcastic disciples.
  5. Jesus is not in a hurry to get to Jairus’ house even though his daughter is on her death bed.  Jesus knows what He is doing, what He will do.
  6. Jesus allows people to interrupt His busy schedule.
  7. Jesus is confident in His power.

Jesus’ Mission is revealed in the following ways:

  1. To heal.
  2. To heal.
  3. To give peace back into people’s lives
  4. To give hope in death
  5. To raise the dead

Take-Aways

  1. Jesus will respond to my cry for help.
  2. Both Jairus and the bleeding woman had nothing to lose, they were at the end of their rope and life.
  3. If Jesus is so confident in His power than why am I not always confident in His power?
  4. Jesus is the Great Physician.  Where all other doctors failed and even caused the situation of the woman to get worse, Jesus was able to heal and cure.
  5. I think Jesus takes great joy in healing, He certainly does not do it grudgingly.

011: Mark 6:1-56

Jesus’ Person is revealed in the following ways:

  1. Jesus astonishes people with His teaching, His wisdom and His mighty works.
  2. Jesus was a carpenter
  3. Jesus had brothers and sisters
  4. People found the human, family man Jesus to be offensive because He was teaching with authority and doing mighty acts of healing.
  5. Jesus was physically tires and probably emotionally drained from John the Baptist’s (His cousin) execution.
  6. Jesus was aware that His disciples needed rest
  7. Sometimes there were so many people around Jesus for so long that He didn’t even have time to eat.
  8. Jesus was popular.  To the point to where people would see Jesus sail off on a boat then follow Him  on foot to desolate places.
  9. Jesus was God, He could walk on water.

Jesus’ Character is revealed in the following ways:

  1. Jesus was compassionate.  He saw that the people were like sheep without a shepherd.  Even though Jesus was tired and needed some rest, He met the people’s needs.
  2. Jesus challenges the disciples, “You give them something to eat.”
  3. Jesus was merciful to the disciples as they struggled in the boat

Jesus’ Mission is revealed in the following ways:

  1. To teach
  2. To teach
  3. To send out the 12 to proclaim the gospel and have authority over evil spirits
  4. To supernaturally feed people
  5. To pray
  6. To give peace to the burdened, the terrified and the scared.
  7. To heal

Take-Aways:

  1. Ministry can be exhausting and it’s ok to take breaks for rest
  2. Jesus was highly relational
  3. Jesus’ compassion shows that when He was with other people He focused on them and meeting their needs, not on Himself and meeting His own needs
  4. Jesus supplies our needs above and beyond what we need, He gives us more than enough, His death has covered our past, present and future sins.
  5. We all desperately need Jesus
