The Best Food You’ve Ever Had
I love food. Well, most food. I’m not a big fan of Indian cuisine. I find that food satisfies me. I delight in a good meal. I use it to reward myself after I’ve worked hard, I use it to comfort myself when I’m depressed. Food is one of my idols. So, when I read this summary of Psalm 37:3-4 this morning I was intrigued.
“May I trust in the Lord and do good; may I dwell in the land and feed on Your faithfulness. When I delight myself in the Lord, You will give me the desires of my heart.”
This idea of “feeding on the faithfulness of God” gave me pause to ask myself, “Do I realize the best food I could possibly ever have is in the faithfulness of God?” But what is the “faithfulness of God?” The context of the Psalm is seen in how God has treated the author, King David. David had seen the faithfulness of God throughout his life. God had been faithful to David in his obedience and through his sinfulness. David testifies in this Psalm and many others that God is the one who is constantly faithful. That God is the one who alone keeps His promises. That it is God who alone is to be trusted.
Ultimately, we see God’s faithfulness realized in its fullest degree when one of David’s heirs, Jesus, comes and fulfills all of God’s promises. It is the life, death, resurrection and reign of Christ that proves the faithfulness of God.
So, I am challenged to shift my thoughts, to realign my taste buds, to savor the faithfulness of God through His Son, Jesus. That means I can recall the faithfulness of God throughout my life. It means I can daily go and feed on this faithfulness as I look to Jesus to satisfy me, to give me the desires of my heart, which are really the desires of His heart.
How have you seen God’s faithfulness in your life? I challenge you to feed upon His goodness and steadfast love toward you. Drink deep of His gospel and eat until you can’t take another bite of His grace.
All for Jesus,
